What a Xero review actually checks.
Xero will happily stay green while the underlying records drift. Reconciled in the feed is not the same as reconciled to the statement, and a tidy profit and loss can sit on top of a balance sheet nobody has opened in a year.
A qualified accountant (ACCA) is accountable. The finance team you don't hire.
Every bank feed reconciled to statement, duplicate and unreconciled transactions cleared, VAT codes checked against what you actually filed, control accounts agreed to their supporting detail, and a balance sheet that stands up line by line. At Par works inside your Xero — the file stays yours, and every correction is traceable.
The things that actually go wrong.
What goes wrong in a Xero file?
Usually the automation, working exactly as instructed.
Bank rules that fire on the wrong transactions and keep firing. The same account connected twice, so every entry appears twice. VAT codes applied by habit rather than by treatment, which only surfaces when the return is compared to the ledger. Control accounts — VAT, PAYE, trade debtors and creditors — carrying balances that no longer agree to anything. A suspense account quietly absorbing what nobody could code.
Why does the UK calendar make this urgent?
Because the payment date comes before the return date.
Companies House wants accounts nine months after your accounting reference date. The CT600 is not due to HMRC until twelve months. But corporation tax itself is payable at nine months and one day — before the return that calculates it is due. You cannot pay the right amount on the right date from books you have not reviewed.

What else has changed that touches the file?
Identity verification is live, and filing moves to software in 2028.
Identity verification at Companies House became a legal requirement on 18 November 2025. Directors give their personal code at the company’s next confirmation statement; people with significant control who are also directors have fourteen days after that date, and those who are not directors verify by the fourteenth day of their birth month. Separately, from 1 April 2028 all companies must file accounts using commercial software — a date that moved, having originally been trailed for 2027.

One document in. Recorded, with its evidence.
Read, checked twice, recorded.
It balances · evidence attached · append-only. At Par records it — you still authorise the payment.
Priced against the hire, not the software.
An in-house bookkeeper in the UK typically costs £24,000–40,000 a year, before on-costs. At Par is a fraction of that — the accountant and the accounting system in one, a qualified accountant accountable.

Do you do audit? +
No. At Par keeps your books audit-ready and prepares your accounts; we do not provide audit or assurance services. A qualified accountant is accountable for the work.
